Original World War I WW1 poster on linen US shipping board J.M. Flagg 1918
SOLD $861.02 Sold: Mar 22, 2024 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
Original American poster printed in 1918 to promote the US Shipping Board and Emergency Fleet Corporation, the latter founded in 1917 to build the ships needed for transporting US soldiers and sailors to the First World War in Europe. The image, which shows a US sailor and US infantryman walking jauntily on either side of a shipyard laborer, communicates that all three are equally important for the US to win the war. Artist is the renowned James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his iconic (as well as rare and valuable) 1917 Uncle Sam "I Want You for US Army" recruiting poster. Flagg designed many other posters during both world wars. This poster is a lovely example of Flagg's signature style at an affordable price. Poster measures 40 x 30 inches and is newly linen-backed on 7 oz cotton duck and acid-neutral paper with an alkaline reserve to counteract future toning and deterioration of the paper. Excellent condition; no traces of fold lines since poster was always stored rolled. There are two photos, one with and one without flash. Please note: the toning visible on the borders of the image is the on the excess linen backing, not the poster itself. Poster will ship rolled in a heavyweight tube. Flat $20 shipping fee for lower 48 US states. Actual shipping charged to other destinations using a carrier of the buyer's choice. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
Note: This item has been sold and is no longer available. This page serves as a historical price reference for WWI collectors and appraisers.
