This auction is for a super piece of WWI history, an original photo collection book by an identified United States volunteer who became a noted armed forces aviator. The photos includes The Hat in the Ring insignia represented the 94th Aero Squadron of the United States Army Air Service (USAAS) during World War I. The airman who put this together later operated Fowler Brothers bookstore, the oldest of its kind in Los Angeles, Ca. He was an aviator as well as a writer and worked for a time after the war as sports editor of the Los Angeles Times.Edward Vernon Rickenbacker, also known as Eddie Rickenbacher, 94th Aero Squadron, was an American fighter pilot in World War I and a Medal of Honor recipient. With 26 aerial victories, he was the most successful and most decorated United States flying ace of the war. He was also a racing driver, an automotive designer, and a long-time head of Eastern Air Lines. Per the October 3, 1918, edition of the Los Angeles Times, "Rickenbacker and Fowler [were] close personal friends, dating from the days when both were in the automobile game in Los Angeles, with neither ever having a thought of flying airplanes."This would make a perfect addition to The San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM), Los Angeles Times Archives, Occidental College Collection, Los Angeles Historical Society or your own collection of WWI Military history.
