German M18 "EAR CUT OUT" Helmet In August 1918 the NEW German M18 helmets entered service, named "EAR CUT OUT", due to the "anomalous" cut of the side flaps. It is thought that this new design was dictated by 3 main reasons: 1 - To facilitate the insertion of headphones 2 - To reduce the "BELL" effect of the shrapnel and various materials that hit it. The Ear Cut-Out M1918 is often referred to as the "cavalry", "fascist" or "telephone talker" helmet.
